Medical
Phuket has two high quality hospitals, the Phuket International Hospital and the Bangkok Phuket Hospital . Both are close to Phuket City and offer an impressive range of modern facilities and English speaking personnel. The Bangkok Phuket Hospital even has a recompression chamber dedicated to diving accidents.

Laws
Like everywhere in Thailand , drugs are illegal and the punishments are extremely harsh, with lengthy stretches of imprisonment. The death sentence applies in trafficking cases, so don't get involved.

Currency
The currency is Thai Baht – US$1 is about 30Baht, UK £1 is about 60Baht, as a rough estimate, but check the conversion rate before your trip.

Banking
Normal banking hours are 8:30am to 3:30pm Monday to Friday, but some branches in shopping centres will stay open till 7:00pm. Currency exchange booths are usually open all day, 7 days a week and 24hr ATMs are widely available.

Culture
Thailand is ruled by their monarchy and their royal family command much respect from their people. Visitors must do the same - blasphemy or defacing imagery of the royals are criminal offences. Also, Thais traditionally regard feet as the lowliest part of the body, so don't sit and point them at anyone and always remove your shoes if invited into a Thai home. Likewise, the head is the upmost part of the body, so don't pat anyone on their head as this is disrespectful.

Religion
Phuket is part Muslim and part Buddhist, so both traditions should be respected. If visiting any temples or religious monuments, be sure to cover up appropriately. Also, don't eat food with your left hand.

Electricity & Plugs
Standard voltage is at 220V with a two-pin plug with no earth.

Emergency Numbers
In the unfortunate event of an emergency, it is best to call 1155 for the tourist police, as they speak English and will understand your predicament. The regular police can be reached on 191, but it is best if you can explain to a Thai person who can call on your behalf.

Visas
Visitors to Thailand need a valid passport with at least six months before expiry. Most nationalities can receive a 30 day visa on arrival, but it's worth checking if you need to obtain a visa in advance. If you plan to stay for more than 30 days, you can buy a 60 day visa in advance.
